Haulout Hout Bay

Hout Bay Boat Yard
Vessel up to 9.9 metres: 900 rand one way.
Storage: 210 rand / day for first 5 days then 100 rand / day
Pressure wash: 30 rand / metre.
Hire of cradle (there is only one) 40 rand / day

Before
While power washing the bottom after being hauled out I deliberately strayed onto the topside and watched as paint flew off. The two pack paint was old and peeling. I bit the bullet and had it resprayed. The job in Aus would have cost $10 grand plus - here it was considerably less. This job was done by Wellington and offsider Shoes. Note: This did not turn out to be one of the skipper's better decisions, after crossing the Atlantic  the new paint looked like it had serious chicken pox and blisters.

During
I was pleased with the bottom paint that I used 16 months and about 5,000 miles ago - Jotun Seaforce 60. I could probably have got away with another year but had bought the paint already. This time I put on enough paint, Seaforce 90, to hopefully get away with 3 years. One can only buy 20 litre cans of this paint used on ships.  After rolling on 4 coats of paint I'd had enough. There was about 4 litres left in the can. There was not as much evidence of osmosis in the hull as there was last haulout. This may have had something to do with having treated the several hundred potential blisters last time in Rebak, Malaysia.

Other jobs:

  • Replace stern gland packing.
  • Bottom paint Jotan seaforce 90
  • Repairs to rudder
  • Re-bed engine water inlet thru hull fitting.

After
After 6 days on the hard at the Hout Bay Boat Yard Sadiqi was successfully refloated. Warren and the guys from the yard were very professional and the security was good.

Preparations for the cruising year ahead

Spectacular colours of Hout Bay
Passage planning to continue chasing sunsets. purchasing charts, cruising guides and pilots. Perusing Google earth, noonsite and wikipedia on destinations.

Work on the boat.
Maintenance on the boat - a lot of money was poured into the hole in the water which Sadiqi currently occupies. The strong Aussie dollar and the weaker South African Rand has helped considerably with upgrades or replacement of equipment on the boat. This has included a new anchor and chain. The divorce from the old SQR anchor called B-Anchor, frequently referring to a female dog was a relief! However, it would appear the separation was painful, as I was unable even to give the bloody thing away. Roxy the new Rocna anchor looks and behaves more like she is up the for task of keeping the boat attached to the seabed.

Being on a marina in Hout Bay has helped considerably with getting boat jobs done. This is the first time that Sadiqi has been in a marina for longer than a week since leaving Australia in 2010. The generosity, advice and help given by people at the Hout Bay marina has been exceptional. A special thanks go to Anna, Penny, Saskia, John, Loki, Peter and Alan to name a few.

Listed below are some of the jobs that were done on the boat while in South Africa. This is more for the skippers benefit in years to come to remember what was done. A lesson learned about procrastination. Finding a task that is arduous enough that all other tasks will be completed before it. In the skippers case this task was driving the sewing machine, or more to the point doing the preparation work before driving the sewing machine. The sewing machine sat brooding on the saloon table taunting the skipper for weeks prior to the skipper finally having the courage to use it again. In the interim many other jobs on the boat were completed as the following list will attest.
